It is generally assumed the song owes its inspiration to his former girlfriend Suze Rotolo. Shortly after Dylan's original the song would be covered by Johnny Cash with his then-future wife June Carter, and subsequently by Joan Baez. However, the biggest hit would be by the Turtles, who issued the song as their debut single in mid 1965. The band's lead singer Howard Kaylan has commented that Dylan saw the band perform at the Revelaire Club in Redondo Beach, California, and urged them to record the song for their debut single. Whether this telling holds any truth is unclear, yet it has been reported that Dylan favored a number of covers of his songs over his own versions, perhaps most notably Mr Tambourine Man by the Byrds and All Along The Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix. For the Turtles, It Ain't Me Babe would be their first of about half a dozen Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hits through the end of the decade, including most notably the 1967 No.1 hit Happy Together. The band would also serve as a launching pad for singer, keyboardist Howard Kaylan and singer, guitarist Mark Volman who would go on to work with Frank Zappa and later form the duo Flo & Eddie.
