Marlena ShawJanuary 19, 2024 ~ Marlina Burgess, commonly known as jazz, blues, soul singer Marlena Shaw, passed away ~ First turned to music by her uncle jazz trumpeter Jimmy Burgess, who introduced her to recordings of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, gospel, and singer Al Hibbler who in Shaw's words “really knows how to phrase a song”. Her uncle first brought her to the stage to sing with his band while Shaw was still in her early teens. As a solo performer, Shaw has been active since the early 1960s, getting her first big break when a regular gig at the Playboy Club, Chicago, drew the attention of representatives of Chess Records, who then signed her to the subsidiary Cadet Records label. Though she never became a household name, Shaw is fondly remembered for her rendition of California Soul taken off her 1969 The Spice Of Life sophomore album, her highly acclaimed 1974 Who Is This Bitch Anyway album, and a string of disco tracks through the late 1970s ~ Burgess was born in 1942
Mary WeissJanuary 19, 2024 ~ Singer Mary Weiss, full name Mary Louise Weiss, passed away in Palm Springs, California, USA ~ Leader of 1960s R&B girl group the Shangri-Las. Sang lead on Remember (Walking In The Sand), Give Him A Great Big Kiss and Out In The Streets. Sang co-lead on the band's biggest hit, The Leader Of The Pack, in tandem with Elizabeth Weiss. You Look GoodJanuary 19, 2017 ~ Country, country-pop outfit Lady Antebellum release You Look Good, lifted off their Heart Break album ~ A few years earlier, the band's popularity declined which they attributed to fatigue. Lady Antebellum would go on a hiatus, with each member focusing on projects outside the band to return with renewed energy for Heart Break, the band's seventh studio album. Its lead single, You Look Good, brought them right back to center stage. It was warmly received by critics, All Noise pointing out the song's fresh sound, while Taste Of Country praised the song's energy. Country singer Thomas Rhett had the song on hold until Lady Antebellum picked it up. You Look Good reached top 10 Billboard Country, peaking at No.8

You're AmazingJanuary 19, 1991 ~ In its 10th week on the charts, You're Amazing by Robert Palmer peaks at No.28 Billboard Hot 100 ~ Robert Palmer had enjoyed popularity especially during the mid-1980s, Addicted To Love, I Didn't Mean To Turn You On, and Simply Irresistible all becoming massive hits. However, by the 1990s the suave gentleman's music would go out of style. The guitar-heavy You're Amazing, at the time of its release described by Billboard as a quirky but potent combination on account of its “strong soul stylings added to headbanger guitar riffs and sweet background harmonies”, would be one of his last hits. Other than You're Amazing Palmer's Don't Explain album would subsequently spawn one more hit, the Billboard Hot 100 No.16 hit Mercy Mercy Me/I Want You being his last to reach the American pop charts. Throughout the remainder of the 1990s, Palmer would occasionally chart inside the top 40 in his native UK, before passing away in 2003
