When session singer Carl Douglas passed a couple of kids outside a pinball arcade playfully doing mock kung fu moves to the music, it hit Douglas: “everybody was kung fu fighting.” Douglas would later comment: “At that moment, I heard it all in my head, melody line as well, so I had to rush home and write it down.” The song was initially intended as a novelty B-side, but producer Biddu thought it should be the A-side.
