Written by Marcus Hummon, who first recorded the song for his 1995 album All In Good Time, with Monty Powell, and Kip Raines. Powell would later recall on how the song became to be, him and Raines over at Hummon's house working on a rudimentary draft: “We wound up writing and writing, and we sort of got stuck on how to bring it home. Landing a role in the 1973 film That'll Be The Day, which also featured Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, he asked the film's producer if he could write the closing song for the film. Essex came up with Rock On, a song that summons the rebellious nature of his character amid the backdrop of rock & roll. The song would not be used in the film. However, it did land him a record deal with CBS, and became an international hit, reaching top 10 in Australia, America, Canada, and his native UK. The song would be his sole American hit, yet he would score over half a dozen more top 10 hits at home including the No.1 hit Hold Me Close in 1975.
