Country producer Billy Sherrill had heard Midler perform the song before she recorded it, and planned to sign her only to find out she had just signed with Atlantic Records. So Sherrill cut the song with Tucker instead, the distinction in Tucker's version being the a capella opening. Issued as her debut single, Delta Dawn would reach No.6 Billboard Country and propel the then 13-year-old singer to fame.
